Autonomy is the backbone of higher education in India. It encourages colleges to innovate practices and achievement excellence. Institutional autonomy denotes power capabilities educational institutes set their policies for teaching learning, research, admission procedure, fee structure, evaluation implementation. The college should practice at grassroots level address need hour. An attempt has been made analyze history from ancient India totodays’UGC’srevised guidelines. Major recommendations committees commissions, objectives, implementation, drawbacks, reasons have discussed.
